Loop’s Nonprofit Website Design Process
Reaching and motivating all of the audiences who may visit your website makes strategic design important. At Loop, we approach nonprofit website design by guiding you through the following framework:
We think critically about how you want to portray your organization online to identify goals for your website’s architecture, platform, design and integrations. We then dive into your core audiences, engaging them through surveys and activities to learn about their motivations, goals, frustrations, and sensitivities. You will receive a website brief outlining key findings from these activities and proposing a strategy for the site at the end of the process.
The needs of your organization’s various audiences and your overall goals form the basis for our navigation approach. We organize content topics into an interactive sitemap and propose a menu design. We then collaborate with you to revise and validate the sitemap, ensuring it results in an optimal user experience.
A digital style guide outlines the visual assets and elements that form the foundation for your nonprofit website and expresses how your brand and content will come to life online. This guide includes colour prompts with accessible contrast ratios, typography options, button and link styles, cards and grids, and guidelines for photography and video.
Mockups combine the sitemap and style guide, outlining the design of each page type and displaying the content flow. At this stage, you can interact with a visual prototype of your nonprofit website. As you click through pages and sections, you have the freedom to provide input and feedback as we iterate the design until it’s pixel-perfect.
The content stage is where the written and media resources for your site are assembled. Whether your nonprofit engages an external copywriter or develops content in-house, we provide you with templates and tips to ensure your content is clear, concise, and optimized.
We create your new website on WordPress using an accessible visual builder framework as a foundation. This fast, SEO-optimized framework provides a high level of flexibility in design, accessibility, and scalability. Each website includes a toolbox of responsive, custom-designed rows and modules, which empower you to easily edit pages or quickly assemble new pages using a drag-and-drop interface.
In preparation for your site launch, we move all of your finalized copy from the content templates into WordPress. If you want to add custom functionalities and interactions to your site, such as donation forms, CRM integrations, and multi-language capabilities, we add them at this stage as well.
Testing and Launch
Once everything is connected and running smoothly, it’s time to get testing! Your organization will have access to a fully functioning version of the website on a staging server where you can test the flow, content, and media and request changes. Meanwhile, our team will conduct cross-device, browser, and accessibility tests to ensure compliance. We also implement page metadata, add alt text to images, and develop a redirection map from your old site to the new one.
When all of these tests and final edits are completed, the website can be launched! Hooray!
Training and Support
Ensuring you have the skills and tools to manage your website is important to us. We provide a digital training session on maintaining your website and help you set up WordPress user accounts for your organization to gain access to the backend. We also develop documentation for your team to ensure a basic how-to guide is available for the staff members who will update the site going forward.
Need ongoing web development support? We offer flexible retainer and maintenance services for all websites that we build.
